"Munna Bhai MBBS" is a 2003 Indian comedy-drama film directed by Rajkumar Hirani. The film revolves around the life of Munna, a kind-hearted but mischievous gangster played by Sanjay Dutt. Munna dreams of becoming a doctor to fulfill his father's wish, but due to his criminal background, he is unable to get admission to medical college.
The story begins with Munna and his sidekick Circuit, played by Arshad Warsi, running a fake medical clinic to cheat people. One day, Munna's parents learn about his criminal activities and his father suffers a heart attack. This incident prompts Munna to change his ways and pursue a medical degree.
Determined to get admission to a medical college, Munna disguises himself as a doctor and joins a prestigious institution, the Imperial College of Medical Sciences. There, he encounters the strict and no-nonsense Dean, Dr. Asthana, played by Boman Irani. Munna, with his street-smart ways and unconventional methods, manages to win over the patients and staff of the hospital, including the beautiful and compassionate Dr. Suman, played by Gracy Singh.
As Munna tries to balance his double life, he faces numerous challenges and humorous situations. His lack of medical knowledge becomes evident, but he compensates with his genuine care for patients. Munna's antics, coupled with Circuit's humorous support, bring joy and laughter to the otherwise tense hospital environment.
During his time at the hospital, Munna's true identity is revealed, and he is expelled from the college. Driven by his desire to make amends and fulfill his father's dream, Munna embarks on a journey to win back the trust of the people he has deceived.
The climax of the film revolves around a medical crisis involving a cancer patient, Zaheer, played by Jimmy Shergill. Munna, with his newfound knowledge and support from the hospital staff and patients, manages to save Zaheer's life and prove his worth as a doctor. Dr. Asthana realizes Munna's potential and allows him to complete his medical education.
In the end, Munna graduates as a doctor and sets up a free clinic in memory of his father. The film concludes with Munna's transformation from a gangster to a compassionate doctor, emphasizing the importance of empathy, love, and human connection in the field of medicine.
"Munna Bhai MBBS" was a critical and commercial success, receiving praise for its performances, humor, and emotional depth. The film spawned a sequel titled "Lage Raho Munna Bhai" in 2006, which further explored Munna's character and his journey towards social reform.
